Crabbing & Clamming in New Jersey: Your Complete Guide
New Jersey's back bays and estuaries are a shellfish paradise. Blue crabs thrive in Barnegat Bay, Great Bay, Delaware Bay, and the numerous tidal creeks that wind through the coastal marshes. Hard clams (quahogs) are abundant in the shallow bay flats from Sandy Hook to Cape May. Whether you're trapping crabs off a dock or wading for clams at low tide, NJ offers some of the best shellfishing on the East Coast.
Blue Crab Fishing in NJ
The NJ blue crab season runs from late May through November, with peak catches fromJuly through September when water temps reach 75โ85ยฐF. The most productive areas include Barnegat Bay, Great Bay, Mullica River, and the Delaware Bay shore. Minimum size is 4.5 inches point-to-point. Egg-bearing (sponge) females must be released. A recreational crab pot license is required if you use more than 2 traps.
Clamming in New Jersey
Hard clam harvesting is permitted year-round in approved waters with a NJ Shellfish License ($11 for residents). The daily bag limit is 150 clams per person. Top clamming areas include Barnegat Bay, Little Egg Harbor, Brigantine, and the back bays of Ocean County. Always check NJ DEP for current shellfish closures โ many areas close seasonally due to water quality testing.
Tips & Related Resources
The best crabbing happens on incoming tide through high tide using chicken necks, bunker, or fish racks as bait. For clamming, low tide exposes the flats and makes wading easier.
